Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 1993; in 2000, it was granted the master degree program in structural engineering; in 2006, it was approved for the right to grant the degree in architecture and civil engineering; in 2011, it was approved as the first-class master degree in civil engineering; in 2012, it was granted four national engineering practice education centers; in 2012, the specialty of civil engineering successfully passed the assessment (certification) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and in 2017, it passed the re-assessment, which is valid for six years; in 2018, the Key Laboratory for the Discipline of Civil Engineering Green Construction and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance in Hebei was approved; in 2019, the specialty of Civil Engineering was approved as provincial first-class undergraduate program construction site in Hebei Province; in 2020, the major of civil engineering was approved as the national first-class undergraduate program construction site; and in 2022, the Engineering Research Center of Urban Solid Waste Harmless Cooperative Disposal and Utilization in Hebei was approved. In 2021, the Department was ranked 49th in China by the Times and 44th by the Alumni Association.
There are 48 teachers, among them 96% with doctoral degree, including 10 professors (including 5 doctoral supervisors), 14 associate professors, 13 with overseas experience, one virtue model in Hebei, 2 famous teachers in Hebei, one famous teacher of Curriculum Ideological and Political Building in Hebei, one excellent S&T Worker in Hebei, one talent of “333 Talent Project”, one talent of “100 Outstanding Innovative Talents” project in Hebei, two teaching pacesetters of YSU and one talent of “New Talent Project”. The Specialty now has three directions such as housing construction engineering, road and bridge engineering, geotechnical and underground engineering, and six professional laboratories serving the civil engineering, with an area of more than 1300 m2and various instruments and equipment in a total value of more than RMB25.00 million.
Relying on the disciplinary advantages, the specialty of Civil Engineering has made remarkable achievements in teaching and scientific research, with nearly 20 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China as the first completing institution and 19 national and provincial educational reform projects approved, and won 9 S&T Progress Awards of Hebei Province, 2 Teaching Achievement Awards of Hebei Province and more than 50 authorized invention patents, and published more than 200 high-level papers (SCI, EI, and Chinese excellent journals). It has published more than 200 high-level papers (SCI, EI, Chinese excellent journals, etc.) and has one excellent teaching team of YSU. The Department has guided students to participate in and win many awards in national competitions such as “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of College Students, “Challenge Cup” Extra-curricular Academic S&T Competition of College Students, National Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Social Practice and Technology Competition of College Students, National Structural Design Competition of College Students, Advanced Mapping Technology and Product Information Innovation Competition, etc.
The Department has actively promoted the internationalization of undergraduate and postgraduate training and been granted “2+2 Student Exchange Program for High-level Universities between China and Foreign Countries” of Ministry of Education (cooperation with the University of Queensland, Australia) and the “Special Program for Cultivating Talents in the Western Region and Local Innovation Sub-Program of Local Cooperation Program” of China Scholarship Council and established the first international master class and full English teaching team.
The specialty of Civil Engineering will continue to uphold the spirit of Valuing Virtue, Pursuing Knowledge, and Seeking Truth, and contribute to the technical fields such as collaborative resource utilization of multiple solid wastes, concrete durability enhancement in complex environments, major geological disaster forecasting and prevention, complex geotechnical engineering problem disposal, earthquake engineering and engineering seismic resistance, resilient city construction, and intelligent construction of civil engineering.
