Originating from the Teaching and Research Section of Mechanics, School of Heavy Machinery, Harbin Institute of Technology, School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics was founded in 1958. In 1996, the Department of Civil Engineering and Mechanics was established, and in 2001, it was renamed as the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics.

At present, the school has 137 registered faculty members and 110 full-time teachers, including 20 professors (including 10 doctoral supervisors), 38 associate professors (including 3 doctoral supervisors), and 95 teachers have doctoral degree. There are one Teacher Morality Pacesetter in Hebei, three Famous Teachers in Hebei, one Famous Teacher of Curriculum Ideological and Political Building in Hebei, one second-level candidate and one third-level candidate for “333 Talent Project”, one Top Young Talent in Hebei, two Advanced Individuals of Teacher Moralilty in Qinhuangdao, three Outstanding Teachers in Qinhuangdao, one Teacher Morality Pacesetter of YSU, three “Cutting-edge Engineering” Talents, two Excellent Teaching Teams, four Famous Teachers, two winners of “Teaching Achievement Awards” and five winners of “Teaching Pacesetter Award” of YSU.

The school has four undergraduate specialties (departments), including Civil Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering and Architecture, and one comprehensive experimental center. Civil Engineering (2012, 2017) and Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering (2019) passed the “Certification (Evaluation) of Undergraduate Specialties” by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Civil Engineering and Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering are national first-class undergraduate program construction sites, while the Engineering Mechanics and Architecture are the provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites. The school has won one second prize and two third prizes of Teaching Achievement Award in Hebei, three provincial excellent courses, two first-class undergraduate courses, one national third prize of National Teaching Competition of Young College Teachers and one national second prize of National Teaching Innovation Competition of College Teachers. Two cases of Curriculum Ideological and Political Building were selected as the excellent ideological and political cases of mechanics in national colleges and universities.

In 1986, the school obtained the right to grant a master degree in solid mechanics. At present, it has the right to grant a doctor degree in the first-class discipline of mechanics, a post-doctoral research mobile station in mechanics, a key discipline of engineering mechanics in Hebei and the right to grant a master degree in the first-class discipline of mechanics and civil engineering, and in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering. It has 6 provincial teaching and research platforms, such as Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Basic Mechanics in Hebei, Key Laboratory on Mechanics Reliability of Heavy Equipment and Large Structure in Hebei, Laboratory of Civil Engineering Green Construction and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance in Hebei, Technology Innovation Center for Low-carbon and Clean Heat Supply of Buildings in Hebei, Engineering Research Center of Urban Solid Waste Harmless Cooperative Disposal and Utilization in Hebei, Technology Innovation Center of High-Performance Construction Materials in Hebei. There are 42 industrial-university-research bases jointly established by university and enterprises, including 4 national engineering practice education centers, 23 postgraduate practice teaching bases and 8 postgraduate joint training bases.

In recent years, the school has presided over 33 national projects and 57 provincial and ministerial projects. It has won more than 10 provincial and ministerial S&T awards, 6 industry S&T awards and more than 70 invention patents. It has published more than 500 papers included in SCI and EI. In the past five years, students have made outstanding achievements in college students’ S&T activities, subject competitions and social practice. It has won 4 national second prizes and one third prize of Challenge Cup, 5 provincial special prizes and 3 first prizes, and has been granted 346 scientific research projects for undergraduates at all levels and has won 160 national awards in discipline competitions.

School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics insists on opening its university-running activities and has established extensive and close ties and cooperation with experts at home and abroad. The school actively promotes the “Student Exchange Program for High-level Universities between China and Foreign Countries” to cooperate with Queensland University in Australia, aiming at cultivating the compound and applied talents with international vision, and promoting the establishment of a multi-field and high-level long-term cooperation mechanism with Queensland University by means of curriculum matching, two-way credit mutual recognition and segmented joint training. The school has set up an international master class to provide an all-English teaching team, strengthen the management of training process, further enhance the level and quality of international education, and continuously promote the connotative and high-quality development of international education.
